Carbs Aren't the Enemy โ They're Fuel for the Long Road
Carbs Aren't the Enemy โ They're Fuel for the Long Road
Let me clear something up today, because it's quietly costing good men their progress.
Somewhere along the way, carbs became the villainโ. Cut them all, cut them forever, and the fat will melt โ that's the story. And I get why it's tempting: drop carbs and the scale drops fast that first week. But here's what most guys don't realize โ that early drop is mostly water, not fat. And if you've got a real road ahead of you, going low-carb-forever is one of the fastest ways to quit before you finish๐.
This Is a Marathon, Not a Sprint
If you need to lose 20, 30, 40 pounds or more โ or you're recomping, building muscle while dropping fat โ you are running a marathon๐โโ๏ธโโก๏ธ. And you don't run a marathon on an empty tank.
Carbs are what let you:
Train hard enough to matter. Carbs fuel the lifts that keep your muscle on while you diet. Weak, depleted workouts don't hold muscle.
Actually stick to the plan. This is the big one. Strip carbs for months and most men get foggy, moody, and exhausted โ then they fall off completely. Adherence for a year beats perfection for a week. Carbs keep you in the game long enough to win it.
Recover and sleep. Fuel in means you bounce back between sessions instead of dragging.
Low carb isn't wrong. Low carb forever, when you've got a long way to go, is how you burn out and quit.
So When DO We Go Low Carb?
Low carb and carb cycling absolutely have their place โ I use both with clients. But they're tools for a specific job, usually near the end of the journey๐ฅ: when you're already lean and chasing those last few points of body fat to bring the abs in. That's a short, strategic phase โ not a way of life.
If you're in the early or middle miles of this thing, pulling carbs out isn't strategy. It's just making the marathon harder for no reason.
What Long-Term Low Carb Quietly Costs You
Here's the part nobody warns you about. Drag out very low carb for the long haul and you don't just lose fat โ you can start losing the stuff you're working so hard to build๐๏ธ:
Muscle mass โ the exact thing that keeps your metabolism high and your body looking strong.
Bone density โ quieter, but it matters a lot for men over 40.
That's not a trade worth making when carbs would've gotten you there with your muscle and strength intact. This is general guidance, not medical advice โ if you've got questions about your own health markers, talk to your doctor and share the results with your coaching team so we can build around them.
The Bottom Line
Carbs aren't the enemy๐ฅ. Quitting is the enemy โ and running on empty for months is what makes men quit.
If you've got a road ahead, eat the carbs your plan gives you, train hard, and trust the process๐. We'll dial them down strategically when the time is right. Not sure where you are in the journey? Check your plan in the client hub and message your coaching team โ mapping that out is exactly what we're here for.
