Eating on the Road — Your Travel Game Plan

Summer means a lot of you are hitting the road ✈️ — work trips, family vacations, a couple weeks abroad. And the number one worry I hear is always the same: "I don't know what the food is going to be like, and I don't want to undo a month of work."

Good news: a trip doesn't have to cost💰 you a thing. You just need a game plan before you go, not a scramble once you're there. Here's how we keep you on track without turning your vacation into a math problem.

First, Watch This

We put together a full breakdown on staying on track while eating out and traveling — Ryan walks through exactly how to order and how to prep before you leave. Give it a watch before your next trip 👇

You can't control the food environment on the road — but you have 100% control over what you put on your fork.

Ordering Out: Know the 3 Levels

Every meal away from home falls into one of three levels, and they are not equal:

  • Level 1 — Gold standard: single ingredients you control🍽️. Grilled meat, plain potato or rice, veggies, sauce on the side. This is what you ask for even at a restaurant — "grilled, no oil, plain."

  • Level 2 — The compromise: a spot that actually focuses on healthy options👍. You'll still get some extra sodium or fat for taste, but it's manageable and fits your macros just fine.

  • Level 3 — The trap: a regular restaurant where you try to order healthy. Unless it's dry-grilled meat and plain potatoes, you're getting hidden oils, butter, and huge portions. The "healthy" menu option is often the worst offender.

When you travel, aim for Level 1 whenever you can, settle for Level 2, and just be honest with yourself at Level 3.

Smart Moves at the Hotel

A little prep makes the whole trip easier. Book a room with a fridge so you can stock water, fruit, and lean protein. Hit a grocery store on day one instead of living off restaurants for every meal🛒. Pack shelf-stable backups — protein powder, jerky, protein bars — so you're never stuck at the airport with only garbage in reach. And keep the water flowing; travel and salty restaurant food will hold water and mess with the scale, so don't panic at a travel-week weigh-in.

Keep Training — No Gym Required

No hotel gym? No problem. Your bodyweight is a full workout💪. Push-ups, squats, lunges, split squats, planks — run a few rounds in your room, and you've kept the muscle stimulated. Even better, use the trip to rack up movement: walk the city, take the stairs, explore on foot. A trip is one of the easiest times to crush your steps without trying.

The Bottom Line

Travel isn't a threat to your results — going in without a plan is. Prep your food, order at the highest level you can, move your body, and drink your water. Do that, and you'll come home right where you left off, or better 🌍.
