Why Men's Testosterone Is Tanking
Why Men's Testosterone Is Tanking
Here's something that should stop you in your tracks. Compared to men a generation ago, the average man today is walking around with meaningfully lower testosterone — at the same age. Not because he's older. Because of when he was born ⚡.
One of the most cited studies on this tracked American men over about two decades and found something wild: a 60-year-old tested in the 2000s had lower testosterone than a 60-year-old tested in the late '80s😱. Average levels dropped by about 20% across those years — a generational slide that plain old aging doesn't explain: same age, different era, lower T.
Sit with the irony for a second. We have better food access, better medicine, and more information than any generation in history — and somehow, when it comes to our hormones, we're going backwards⏮️.
So What's Actually Driving It?
Researchers don't pin it on one villain, but the usual suspects line up with modern life almost too perfectly:
Rising body fat: More body fat — especially around the midsection — tends to track with lower testosterone. This is one of the biggest, most fixable levers, and it's the whole reason you're here.
Worse sleep: Most of your testosterone production happens while you sleep😴. Chronically short, broken sleep starves the system.
Chronic stress: Living in a permanent state of low-grade stress keeps cortisol elevated, and cortisol and testosterone don't play nice.
Sedentary living: Bodies built to move are now sitting 10+ hours a day. Muscle and movement are part of what keeps the hormonal engine running.
Processed everything: Ultra-processed food, less muscle, more fat — the modern default quietly works against you.
Notice a pattern? Almost every driver is downstream of lifestyle — the exact stuff we work on together.
You may not control the era you were born into. You absolutely control the body fat, the sleep, the movement, and the muscle you carry through it.
What This Means for You
Here's the good news buried in the bad. The same habits that strip fat and build muscle — training with intent, hitting your protein, sleeping like it's a job, managing stress, staying out of a chronic deficit longer than you need — are the same habits that support healthy hormones🏋️. You're not choosing between "get lean" and "feel like yourself again." They're the same project.
The Bottom Line
The generational trend is real, but it is not your destiny👍. The dial you have your hands on is your lifestyle — fat, sleep, stress, movement, muscle — and that dial matters more than most men realize.
A note, because this is your health and not a lecture from a coach: if you suspect your testosterone is low, get actual bloodwork and talk to your doctor🩺. Don't guess, and don't self-treat off a symptom list. If you do get tested, share the results with your coaching team through the client hub — we'll help you build the training, nutrition, and sleep habits around whatever the numbers say.
